A Little Insight into the Plasma Generation

In general the concept of plasma is an ionized gas. It is a mixture of free electrons, positive ions and neutral particals. They are in a constant interaction between each other and with photons in different energy and excitation state. That's the reason why it often called the fourth aggregate state.

The plasma result for each gas in different tempertures or different pressures In the nature you can see plasma in aurora or a fluorescent tube.

A plasma thruster can produce plasma with the help of electrodes (Arcjet, MPD-Thruster) and/or with electromagnetic fields (TIHTUS).

Plasmas with high energy density, which you can find in an atmospheric re-entry manoeuvre, are produced for thrusters with high power range at Institut of Space Systems.
