13th International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science at IRS

30. September 2022

End of September, the 13th International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS’22) took place at the Institute of Space Systems (IRS). This marks the second time in 25 years that this conference was held in Germany, and the first time that the RZBW in Stuttgart served as its venue.

The International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS) is a bi-annual conference, which brings together renowned experts in the fields of plasma generation, diagnostics, processing, space propulsion, as well as material science and plasma applications to environmental problems. The conference was first held in Los Angeles in 1997, followed by stops in Japan, USA, Germany, Turkey and Poland. From 26. to 30. September 2022, the 13th ISAPS took place at Stuttgart, organized by a local committee, led by Hendrik Burghaus and apl. Prof. Georg Herdrich.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ISAPS was, for the first time, held in a hybrid format. Over the course of the conference, 40 participants from 10 countries attended, half of them online. Besides captivating talks by established researchers, many students were able to present their work during two poster sessions.

In addition to the scientific exchange, the ISAPS’22 participants could experience regional, cultural highlights, like a city tour in the medieval town of Esslingen or a visit to the Mercedes Benz Museum.

Prof. Kobayashi:

“We have had a good time [in Stuttgart] to present new findings and discuss friendly during the conference.”

Apl. Prof. Herdrich:

“ISAPS’22 has been a great success! The very productive atmosphere during the conference has led to both a fruitful science event as well as a strong networking activity.”

Special thanks of the local organizing committee go to Prof. Akira Kobayashi and Prof. Rei Kawashima, as well as Erik Hofmeyer and, in particular, Prishit Modi for the organizational assistance in planning ISAPS’22, and for their further support during the conference.
