Girls' Day 2025 at the Institute of Space Systems

April 15, 2025

On the 3rd of April, a variety of hands-on activities took place at our university as part of the Germany-wide Girls' Day. The aim of the day of action is to get schoolgirls in particular interested in technical and scientific professions and to give them exciting insights into areas in which women have so far been underrepresented.

At the Institute of Space Systems (IRS), 28 schoolgirls were given exciting insights into the world of space travel. After a rousing lecture by Professor Olthoff on the benefits and versatility of space travel, they were able to control a space capsule themselves and send their own commands to one of our satellites. In our in-house workshop, they put their manual skills to the test by making spinning tops from screws.
They then learnt how magnets and ferrofluids are used in space travel and how 3D printing techniques can simplify the production of components. They were also able to make small satellite models, explore the International Space Station (ISS) in virtual reality and playfully experience the effect of a gyroscopic gyroscope. Particularly impressive: wearing bulky space gloves, they tried to master seemingly simple tasks such as activating a switch or changing a light bulb - a real change of perspective!

Diversity in teams brings new perspectives, creative approaches to solutions and strengthens innovative power especially in space travel, where interdisciplinary thinking and joint problem-solving are crucial. If we get girls interested in space and technology at an early age, we not only create equal opportunities, but also promote sustainable science and technology. Space travel is facing major challenges and this requires bright minds of all genders. Giving girls the opportunity to discover their talents in this field means utilising the full potential of our society.

We hope to have sparked further interest in aerospace among the schoolgirls and look forward to welcoming many of them to our aerospace engineering degree programme soon!
