The working group "Design and Simulation" works on the development of design methodology and tools for the modelling, simulation and analysis of human space systems. In this context, the Space Station Design Workshop (SSDW) provides a conceptual design environment for space stations, vehicles and infrastructures for human space exploration. It is constantly extended and optimized, in order to allow and to support a fast and iterative design process in an interdisciplinary team. At the same time, the SSDW enables realistics education in Systems and Concurrent Engineering in international, team-centred workshops.

The research work is based on PhD work to develop and incorporate new areas, but also integrates the students themselves through their work in study thesis, diploma thesis or as scientific assistants. Starting from the initial utilization for space station design, the SSDW is currently expanded towards exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit.
