The "Astronautics and Space Stations" department of the IRS works on human spaceflight in general and the conceptual design of space systems and missions. In this context, the following research areas are currently investigated:

  • Design and Simulation
    • Trajectory design and optimization in cis-lunar and interplanetary space
    • Modelling and simulation of manned planetary surface systems
    • Design principles and dimensioning of human space transportation systems
  • In-Situ Gas Sensorics (de)
    • Development and optimization of miniaturized ceramic sensors
    • Space experiments and terrestrial application
  • Regenerative Life Support Systems (de)
    • Analysis and linking of physio-chemical and biological technologies
    • Development of a hardware-in-the-loop test rig (fuel cell, photobioreactor)
  • Space Station Design Workshop
    • Conceptual design environment for human space missions
    • Realistic Education in Systems Engineering
